Kundli Milan: what the 36 gunas actually check
8 September 2026
When two families meet, the first question is usually "kitne gun mile?" The Ashtakoota system gives a score out of 36 by adding eight separate tests, each worth a different number of points. Varna is worth 1, Vashya 2, Tara 3, Yoni 4, Graha Maitri 5, Gana 6, Bhakoot 7 and Nadi 8.
The two heaviest, Bhakoot and Nadi, together carry 15 of the 36 points. Nadi looks at health and progeny through the nakshatra. Bhakoot looks at the Moon signs of the two charts and speaks to temperament and finances. A match can score 28 on paper and still have a Nadi dosha that needs to be read carefully. Equally, a match can score 18 and be perfectly workable once the two heavy tests are clear.
What the gun score does not do is look at the seventh house, the planet ruling it, the Navamsa, or the running dashas of the two people. Those are what actually describe a marriage. A sitting for Kundli Milan spends most of its time there, and treats the 36-point score as the opening line, not the verdict.
If a family has been told a match is "cancelled" because of a single dosha, it is worth a second, unhurried look. Many doshas have classical exceptions written into the same texts that define them.
